Mix Tape Vol.1

I couldn’t wait. I had to get this one out to you babes tonight.

If you know me you know that I love music. Not like an emo teenager who can’t take her headphones out and join the real world, but like a real MUSIC person. I love something from just about every genre. I can’t subscribe to one and I can’t tell you why I like certain songs, exactly. I just like them if they are good. I had a teacher in high school tell me that I need to work for Rolling Stone.

I think what I’m going to do here is periodically post some playlists with themes for you all. You know – since I can’t make mix tapes anymore. . . I don’t know where to buy tapes and I don’t have a tape deck. Wait. Yes I do. In my record player. But I can’t make mix tapes with it, shoot.

I subscribe to Apple Music because they bought out the Beats by Dre music app and I really liked that a lot. I sincerely recommend this to anyone who loves music in any capacity. You can get a plan for $9.99/month and find damned near any song. Yes, I will admit that some songs that I’m looking for are even too abstract for Apple Music, but this is a rarity. I make tons of playlists and am constantly adding to them and creating more. I stopped listening to the radio voluntarily in about 1999 or 2000. . . whenever I discovered Napster, which at the time was an illegal peer-to-peer music sharing program. And I’ve never turned back. I would say this ranks right up there with deleting my Facebook account as one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

So. Without further adieu – here is my first Mix Tape for you!

Saho’s Quintessential Proto-Punk:

A Side

1.) Lou Reed – This Magic Moment

2.) The Sonics – Psycho

3.) Monks – Shut Up

4.) Love – 7 and 7 is

5.) The Velvet Underground – White Light/White Heat

6.) MC5 – Kick Out the Jams

B Side

7.) Iggy & the Stooges – Search and Destroy

8.) New York Dolls – Trash

9.) Patti Smith – Free Money

10.) The Modern Lovers – Road Runner

11.) Pere Ubu – Final Solution

12.) The Clash – London Calling

*disclaimer – I started this playlist a long long time ago and several of the songs were drawn straight from an article that I would have no idea how to find anymore or I’d be very happy to reference the article and credit the author. That being said, he’s not wrong. It’s very good music!

**double disclaimer – some of these don’t fall in the parameters of traditional Proto-Punk, but what are parameters anyway? It’s good to color outside of the lines.

Let me know what you think! Post your own favorite Proto-Punk songs below!
